Donald Green

BERWICK – Donald Green, born March 16, 1935, died peacefully on October 23, 2021 in North Berwick. Don was born in South Portland, one of ten children born to George and Lucy Green. Don is survived by his younger sister, Marilyn Wellington. He also leaves behind his six children, Donald Green, Jr. and his wife Karen, Andrew Green, Sr. and his wife Linda, Darlene Veltre and his wife Robert, David Green, Sr. and his wife Patty, Daniel Green, Douglas Green and his wife Lee; 21 grandchildren, 32 great -grandchildren, and 5 great -grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly. Don has lived in Southern Maine most of his life. As a child, he loved to walk or take the bus to Portland to buy comics, go to the cinema with friends, or spend the whole day swimming (he was a self proclaimed “water bug”). His adventures continued into old age. Later in life, he will make several solo, cross-country road trips. One of his favorite destinations is Las Vegas; he holds an extensive collection of hotel keys, gambling chips from various casinos, and other souvenirs to remind him of his travels. Don is an avid reader and can easily read a few novels a week. Throughout his life, he gained a wealth of knowledge in antiques, cooking, and many other subjects. He has been a fan of classical country music since he was a young man, and despite some memory issues in late life, could easily remember the lyrics of his favorite songs until his last days. He enjoyed visiting friends in the American Legion. Before retiring, Don spent many years as a professional painter. At one point, he was featured on the cover of the Portland Press Herald holding a paintbrush (and cigar). This opportunity in his life was shared with one of his favorite companions: Mickey, a Lhasa apso/shitzu mixed breed dog. Mickey has no better owner than Don, and Don is always grateful to his little friend. After retirement, Don spent time visiting family and helping take care of his son’s pet chickens, which he greatly enjoyed. Don has a dry, witty sense of humor and often jokingly boasts of his good looks and how he needs to “find a rich widow to be with.” Warmly referred to as “Papa” by most of his family, he remained firmly independent until the last days of his life, resisting until he lost the physical ability to do so. It’s for his independent spirit, his humor, generosity, and a million other reasons why he will be missed so much. Rest In Peace, Papa.Private services are held for the family in Forest City.
