Steve Bannon, a one-time senior adviser to former President Donald Trump, was charged Friday with contempt of U.S. congress for violating a subpoena given to him by a select House of Representatives committee investigating the January insurgency. 6.

Bannon will present himself to authorities on Monday. If convicted of two counts for which he was charged by a grand jury – one for refusing to appear before the committee and one for refusing to return documents – he faces up to two years in prison and a $ 2,000 fine.

A mob of hundreds of Donald Trump supporters stormed the joint session of the U.S. congress on Jan. 6 to prevent Joe Biden’s certification as president. The insurgency – as the official calls the incident – was prompted by Trump’s false statements of election fraud behind his defeat in the November polls.

The committee issued subpoenas to at least 20 aides of the former president, which included Meadows and former senior adviser Stephen Miller and former White House spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany, who were working with President Trump at the time in White House.

However, unlike them, Steve Bannon did not work at the White House back then. Trump fired him in 2017, but kept him on his speed dial as an adviser. Bannon played a major role in reinforcing Trump’s lies about election fraud, as did former president Rudy Giuliani’s personal lawyer and others.
