Donald Trump called on Republicans to target U.S. Reps. Nancy Mace and Tom Rice in their primaries in 2022, delivering both South Carolinians a massive blow as they face the challengers ’chief fields.
The former president, in a statement in Nov. 13, called on “Any interest from good and SMART America First Republican Patriots” to challenge so many politicians across the country.
Both Rice, R-Myrtle Beach, and Mace, R-Charleston, were named in Trump’s news release.
It reads:

Mace, a first-term congresswoman, faces fierce criticism from Trump loyalists and some members of her base after she targeted the former president following a Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol that disrupted the certification of 2020 election results. .
“Every victory that Republicans have made over the past four years, including (made) by President Trump, has been erased in just a few short hours,” Mace told The Post and Courier following the events in January. on Capitol Hill.
Mace, however, later voted against approving the commission on Jan. 6 and also voted to oust U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney from the GOP leadership after her harsh condemnation of the president.
Rice, who has been in Washington for nearly a decade, has gained nationwide fame for his role as one of 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump for his role in the Jan. 6 rioting.

The South Carolina Republican Party criticized him and also left him on the guest list for its “First in the South” conference in Myrtle Beach last Oct. 29 and 30.
Rice has voted with Trump 94 percent of the time in the past four years, according to FiveThirtyEight. But his vote to impeach Trump was seen as contrary to what some of the strongest voices on the Republican base value: an eternal allegiance to the former president.
Late last month, Mace voted to hold Steve Bannon-one of President Donald Trump’s closest allies-to criminal contempt in Congress after he rejected a subpoena from the committee investigating the attack on Jan. 6 at the Capitol.
He was the only lawmaker among six Republicans in the state House delegation to support the contempt case.
“Serving in Congress is the honor of my life,” Mace said in a statement. “I look forward to continued service in the 1st District.”
In a late-night statement, Rice welcomed Trump’s comments and said it was clear that the former president would not be too pleased with his current challengers if he was looking for someone else.
“Well, at least I’m number 1 !,” Rice told The Post and Courier. “He seems to be obsessed with my opposition now.”
The statement from Trump could lead to more challengers relying on a packed field of candidates looking to face two South Carolina Republicans, and could also provide weights in favor of some who have already declared their intentions.
Mace will face three announced GOP challengers and a Democrat. Rice will face at least 10 challengers so far.
“Saving America starts with saving the GOP from RINOs, sellouts, and known losers!” Trumps said in his statement.
