Steve Bannon, a longtime adviser to former U.S. President Donald Trump, has surrendered to the FBI to face the first criminal charges filed for refusing to cooperate with a congressional investigation into the deadly Jan. 6 attack. at the Capitol.

Speaking to his supporters on Monday, Bannon looked directly at the camera that was live-streamed on social media website GETTR and urged them to stay focused.

A federal grand jury on Friday charged Bannon with one count of contempt in Congress for refusing to appear for a deposition and a second count for refusing to show documents. Contempt of Congress is a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in prison and a maximum fine of $ 1,000, the Department of Justice said.

Bannon was one of more than 30 people close to the Republican former president ordered by the U.S. House of Representatives Select Committee to testify about what happened on Jan. 6, when thousands of people stormed the Capitol building in an attempt to stop formal congressional certification of Trump’s election defeat to President Joe Biden.

House investigators hope the action against Bannon will motivate other witnesses, such as former Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, to testify. Bannon declined, citing Trump’s insistence that a judge had already denied him the right to keep requested material confidential under a legal doctrine called executive privilege.

U.S. Representative Adam Schiff, Democratic chair of the House Intelligence Committee and a panel member on Jan. 6 said he believes Bannon’s accusation of two counts of contempt in Congress will shake others to stop their disobedience.
