Trump’s ally Bannon spoke harshly after the court appearance

WASHINGTON (AP) Longtime Trump ally Steve Bannon appeared before a judge Monday to face criminal contempt charges for violating a subpoena from a Congressional committee on Jan. 6, after being declared hostile to the outside world. of the court that he would clash with the Biden regime in fighting the allegations.

Bannon did not enter a plea and is scheduled to return to court on Thursday for the next round of what could be the first high -level trial in connection with the January insurgency at the U.S. Capitol.

Federal Magistrate Judge Robin Meriweather released him without bail but asked him to check in weekly with court officials and ordered him to surrender his passport. If convicted, Bannon will face at least 30 days and a maximum of one year behind bars per count, prosecutors said.

Outside the courthouse, a large inflatable rat pretended to be Republican former President Donald Trump was on the sidewalk while crowds waited for Bannon to leave. Some of the crowd shouted at him and called him a traitor, and a man parked around with a sign saying: Clowns are not in the law.

The accusation came as a second expected witness, former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, objected to a separate subpoena from the committee on Friday and as Trump intensified his legal fights to suppress documents and testimony about in insurrection. Bannon and Meadows were key witnesses for the committee because they were both in close contact with Trump during the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

If the House votes to contempt Meadows, that recommendation will also be sent to the Justice Department for possible indictment.

Meadows was Trump’s top aide at the end of his presidency and one of the few people who forced state officials to try and overturn the results of the 2020 election that Democrat Biden won. Bannon promoted the Jan. 6 protests on his podcast after predicting the day before that all hell would be gone.

The committee said Bannon urged Trump to focus on congressional certification and he was present at an event at the Willard Hotel on Jan. 5 where Trump’s allies tried to encourage members of Congress to vote against the results.

Bannon’s attorney, David Schoen said his client did not appear in Congress because he was told by another attorney not to go after Trump claimed executive privilege would apply.

Mr. Bannon was a layman. When the privilege is requested by the alleged holder of the privilege, he has no choice but to keep the documents. You can’t put the genie back in the bottle, he says. Mr. Bannon acted as his attorney advised him to do so by not showing up and by not returning documents in this case. He did not refuse to comply.

Schoen also denied the Justice Department’s decision to prosecute Bannon, saying it contradicted Attorney General Garlands’ statement of commitment to equal justice under the law.

Officials in both Democratic and Republican administrations have been despised by Congress, but criminal accusations for contempt are very rare.

The indictment against Bannon came after a dead Trump administration official including Bannon objected to requests and requests from Congress over the past five years with few consequences, including during an impeachment investigation. The administration of President Barack Obama has also refused to charge two of its officials with violating congressional requests.

The plaintiff alleges that Bannon did not contact the committee in any way since he received the subpoena on Sept. 24 to Oct. 7 when his attorney sent the letter, seven hours after the documents.

Bannon, who worked at the White House at the beginning of the Trump administration and currently hosts the War Room podcast with Conspiracy, was a private citizen who refused to appear to give testimony as required by a subpoena, the indictment said.
