Trump is proud his return to the White House from hospitalization in Covid was ‘made for Broadway’

Donald Trump compared his return to the White House after being hospitalized for Covid-19 to a carefully crafted theatrical production that was timed to air in primetime evening news bulletins.

“It’s like a Broadway production,” Mr. Trump told Jonathan Karl in an interview in March for his new book Betrayal: The Final Act of the Trump Show.

Mr Karl wrote that the former president planned his return from Walter Reed Medical Center to the White House on October 5 last year in detail.

His departure from the hospital at 6:30 pm coincided with network shows, and the president timed his arrival by helicopter to South Lawn for sunset.

Mr Trump climbed the stairs on the South side of the White House and dramatically removed his face mask when he reached the top of the stairs.

Mr Karl, an ABC News political correspondent, wrote that Mr Trump “rarely walked more than he really needed to”.

The former president originally planned to take off his shirt to reveal a Superman shirt under his suit, but it was discussed not to pursue that plan.

He stood at the top of the stairs and, having difficulty breathing from the effects of his Covid disease, grinned as he thumbs up.

Mr Karl reported that he was on a strong dose of medications at the time, including the steroid dexamethasone.

What was made for the TV moment, just a month before the presidential election, may have been the most impressive choreographed event in his presidency, Mr Karl wrote.

It is still unclear when Mr Trump contracted the virus, and it is believed he was contagious when he attended the first presidential debate with Joe Biden.

He repeatedly downplayed the severity of the Covid-19 virus, refused to wear a mask, and spread misinformation about the pandemic.
