After the 2020 election, former Trump lawyer and adviser Sidney Powell reportedly tried to enlist a Department of Defense official to help take then-CIA Director Gina Haspel out of what Powell believed to be a secret. , related to the election mission in Germany, ABC News reports, according to journalist Jonathan Karl’s new book, Betrayal: Inside the Final Act of the Trump Show. The mission, which is not true, has become one of the “most distant claims about the election.”
According to Karl, Powell called the senior intelligence official, Ezra Cohen, on the election result, pushing a “false conspiracy theory that is growing among QAnon’s followers.”
“Gina Haspel was hurt and imprisoned in Germany,” Powell told Cohen, according to Karl. “You need to launch a special operations mission to get him.”
Trump’s attorney believes Haspel was injured while completing a covert CIA operation aimed at seizing and destroying evidence of the vote farewell on an election -related computer server, Karl reports. He thought the CIA was an accomplice. None of that is true.
But Powell believed it, and wanted the Department of Defense to immediately “send a special operations team to Germany,” find the server, and “force Haspel to confess,” Karl wrote.
Cohen, for his part, “thought Powell out of his mind,” and soon reported the call to the chain, according to Karl.
A CIA spokesman later further refuted any conspiracies, telling news outlets, “I’m happy to tell you that Director Haspel is alive and well and in office.”
