Former President Donald Trump was triggered by questions about his daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner while preparing for the 2020 election debates, ABC’s Jonathan Karl wrote in his new book.
Trump was reportedly criticized and said he wouldn’t “sit here and tolerate this bullshit” when the former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R), who plays now President Joe Biden in a mock debate, grilled him with the luck the couple got from outside income during their work as advisers for the Trump administration.
“You have real nerves talking about relatives taking advantage of political power,” Christie told Trump, according to an excerpt from Karl’s “Betrayal: The Final Act Of The Trump Show” published by Insider.
Christie used the line to attack Trump after he was persuaded by the then president’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, to focus the debate on the business dealings of Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, according to the book.
“You invited your daughter and son -in -law to the White House and they earned $ 36 million last year while they were doing people’s business,” Christie said. “Your family traded the influence they had in the White House to earn tens of millions of dollars.”
Trump responded that this was “completely untrue.”
“We lost money here,” he said. “We lost money here. My children are losing money because of this. Jared has sacrificed more than anyone away from his business. He doesn’t earn any kind of money. ”
After Christie attacked his longtime friend again, Trump told him he wouldn’t “sit here and put up with this shit.”
Christie tried to use the moment as a teaching point for the then president.
“If you’re too deep into Hunter Biden things, this is the kind of thing he’ll give you back. You have to be prepared for that. My job is to prepare you,” he said. “I don’t want to hear any more,” he replied. Trump. “I know what they’re going to say. That’s enough. Let’s move on.”
