Meadows slaps McCarthy and suggests Trump should be elected speaker if Republicans win the House

“They don’t skate where the puck is. And so I’ll give them a grade of ‘D,'” Meadows said of the House Republican leadership during a show on the Florida GOP Rep. Podcast. Matt Gaetz. “I believe that with this tactic and strategy – listen, you have to get the Democrats to take a tight vote. You have to make sure that once you get them on the ropes you don’t throw away the white towel.”

Meadows, a Republican from North Carolina who served in the House before he was chosen by Trump as his top aide in 2020, said in a separate appearance on a podcast hosted by Trump ally Steve Bannon that “like he can see the gavel from. (House Speaker) Nancy Pelosi to Donald Trump. ”

“You talk about melting down, people go crazy,” he said.

The speaker of the House does not have to be a member of the House, only elected by the board.

Comments from Meadows highlight growing tensions in the Republican Party, with Trump loyalists publicly criticizing McCarthy, a California Republican who is also one of Trump’s top allies in Congress, less than a year before midterm elections.

McCarthy has faced heat from his party and Democrats in recent stages in Washington, including criticism by some Republicans that their leader wants to punish the more than a dozen House Republicans who voted for a bipartisan infrastructure bill to repair roads and bridges and expand broadband access.Democrats have criticized McCarthy for his decision not to convict Rep. Paul Gosar after the Arizona Republican posted a photoshopped anime video on Twitter describing his murder of Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and swinging a sword at Biden.

Former Ohio Republican Gov. John Kasich, who also served for several hours in the House and ran against Trump in the 2016 Republican presidential primary, told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on “The Situation Room” on Thursday that Meadows’ comments were “very insane.”

“He still seems to be running a lot in the Republican party,” Kasich said of Trump. “As to whether that remains in terms of the pinnacle of his power – yet to be seen. Hopefully we will wake up.”

Meadows is facing pressure from Congress following a subpoena issued by a select House committee investigating the riot on Capitol Hill on Jan. 6. The panel is currently weighing whether to pursue a criminal contempt referral against him, matter which it has already done for former Trump adviser Bannon. Bannon was indicted by the Department of Justice last week and is not guilty of the charges against him.
