Donald Trump could be elected House speaker

In proposing that Donald Trump be installed as speaker of the House if Republicans win control of the chamber next year, former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows acknowledged that “people will go crazy.”

Aside from its natural burning, such a step would be OK indeed by the Constitution. The speaker of the House does not have to be a member of the House, only elected by the board.

As stated in Article 1, Section 2, Clause 5 of the Constitution: “The House of Representatives shall elect [sic] their Speaker and other Officers. ”

No non -member was elected speaker, although some did get votes, including Colin Powell, Stacey Abrams, Sen. Rand Paul and Sen. Tammy Duckworth.

In July, after Trump expressed interest in the idea that he could be a spokesman, Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-Penn.) Passed a resolution amending the rules to say that duty would go only to one member of the House. No action has been taken about it yet.

Meadows ’endorsement of the idea came Thursday in a podcast hosted by Trump ally Steve Bannon. “I want to see the gavel from Nancy Pelosi to Donald Trump,” he said. “What you’re talking about is melting, people are going crazy.”

In the podcast by Rep. Matt Gaetz on the same day, Meadows focused on criticizing the current leadership of House Republicans, led by Kevin McCarthy.

“They’re not skating where the puck is. And so I’m going to give them a grade of ‘D,'” Meadows said. “I believe in this tactic and strategy-listen, you have to do the Democrats to take a tough vote. You have to make sure that once you get them on the ropes you don’t throw away the white towel. ”

Meadows, a Republican from North Carolina, served in the House before he was chosen by Trump to be his top aide in 2020 and remains a high-profile Trump loyalist.

His comments underscore the growing tension in the Republican Party, less than a year before the midterm elections.

McCarthy, an eight -term member of Congress from Bakersfield, has faced heat from his party and Democrats in recent stages in Washington, including criticism by some Republicans that their leader wants to punish more than a dozen House Republicans. to vote for a bipartisan infrastructure bill that would fix roads and bridges and expand broadband access.

Democrats criticized McCarthy for his decision not to convict Rep. Paul Gosar after the Arizona Republican posted a photoshopped video on Twitter describing his assassination of Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and waving the sword at President Biden.

The criticism is thought by some to have been the impetus for McCarthy’s 8½ hour speech overnight on the House floor, which delayed the Democrats ’vote on the domestic policy bill. Declaring himself “angry,” he tried out the role of heir to Trump’s legacy, apparently trying to bolster his claim to the speaker title that was denied him when John Boehner resigned in 2015.

Former Ohio Republican Gov. John Kasich, who also served some time in the House and ran against Trump in the 2016 Republican presidential primary, told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on “The Situation Room” on Thursday that Meadows’ comments were “very insane.”

“He still seems to be running a lot in the Republican party,” Kasich said of Trump. “If that stays in terms of the pinnacle of his power – not seen yet. Hopefully we’ll wake up.”
