Meadows, who served as Trump’s White House chief of staff, said that if Republicans regain a majority in the House in 2022, they should install the former President as spokesman in January 2023.

“I want to see the gavel from (House Speaker) Nancy Pelosi to Donald Trump,” Meadows told Bannon. “You talked about melting – people will go crazy.”

Meadows may have been Trump’s best -known ally who floated the idea, but he wasn’t the first.

In June, the former President had this exchange with conservative radio talk-show host Wayne Allyn Root:

ROOT: “Why not, instead of just waiting for 2024, and I hope you run in 2024, but why not run in 2022 for the United States Congress, a House seat in Florida, win big, lead us in a dramatic landslide victory, take the House of 50 seats, and then you will be the speaker of the House? ”

TRUMP: “You know, it’s very interesting. That’s so interesting. And people have said, run for the Senate, OK, run for the Senate, but you know what? Your idea might be better. It’s very interesting.”

In a subsequent interview with Fox News, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy seemed to give the idea more confidence.

“You know, I’ve talked to President Trump a lot of times,” McCarthy told Fox’s Brian Kilmeade. “He’s telling me he wants to be a speaker, and I think he should be president.”

(McCarthy’s office then told CNN he was wrong, meaning Trump wanted him to be a spokesman.)

Let’s face it first: Yes, Trump could be the Speaker of the House. The speaker is not required to be a member of Congress; the person just needs to get a majority of the members of the House to support their bid for speaker.

And there’s no doubt that some in the Trumpworld-especially Meadows-don’t like the idea that McCarthy will be the spokesman for a new House Republican majority in 2023. Trump did offer praise for McCarthy on Friday for in his marathon overnight speech on the House floor.

To be clear: This is going to be a massive long shot for Trump to finish as speaker. There is a reason why the House never chose someone outside their ranks to serve as its leader.

Plus, Trump clearly has plans to run for president in 2024 – and it’s hard to see how a pit stop as House spokesman would promote that cause.

Of course, since we’re talking Trump here, deciding on any idea-no matter how wild and crazy-is a silly task.

The Point: There’s enough sadness in McCarthy at the heart of the party’s Trump wing that this idea will keep coming up. Whether the former President really pursued this is another question.
