Former President Donald Trump appeared on Laura Ingraham’s Fox News show on Friday night to discuss Kyle Rittenhouse’s acquittal. Rittenhouse, whom Trump described as “brave,” was tried and acquitted of homicide by a massive white jury for shooting three people who attended a racial justice protest, killing two and injuring another . Trump’s interview came days before Rittenhouse made his post-trial debut on the network in a Tucker Carlson interview to be aired on Monday.
Trump praised the jury’s not guilty verdicts and said he believes prosecutors were involved in misconduct, somehow, by prosecuting Rittenhouse: “I think it was a good decision. I was surprised that it had to go like this. Someone should have finished it earlier. Honestly, the case shouldn’t have been brought in. It’s prosecutorial misconduct, in my opinion, and is there a lot going on in this country right now? Embarrassing.”
Trump went on to paint Rittenhouse as a hero, calling him a “poster boy” for killing people in self -defense. “If you’re talking about innocence based on self-defense, this is the poster boy,” Trump told Ingraham. “I think he would have been dead if he had waited a quarter of a second when the gun was pointed at his head. That man will pull that trigger. “
Because of Trump’s ego, Ingraham played a tape of Trump’s initial comments about the shooting and pointed out that the jury seemed to agree with the president’s assessment that Rittenhouse would have been killed if he hadn’t shot the three people in Kenosha- although it should be noted that the two people first shot by Rittenhouse had no guns. After playing a tape of Trump’s comments, he asked her if she felt “bindicated.”
“Well, unproven, I think when you look at that tape, there’s no question in my mind and that’s too early,” Trump said. “I saw it quickly on the news at night. And, you know, I was really surprised when he was first prosecuted. How can you prosecute someone? I think the prosecutors, what they did in order to try and win instead of looking for justice, they were just looking for a win. Perhaps this is a political case to a large extent. “
The former president also weighed in on media coverage of the case, which identified two of his favorite targets, MSNBC and CNN.
“Two networks in particular, if you look at MSNBC and if you look at CNN, they’re really trying to bring out the hate,” Trump said. “These are the people who are not good for this country. They have tried to brush up. They still are.… They are looking for problems. They are looking, they want to see chaos all over the place.”
No one leaves a room without giving himself credit for something, Trump said he, personally, “saved Kenosha.”
“I’m helping to rescue Kenosha, as you know, I went there and I sent a lot of people, a lot of people, because the Democrats who run the areas aren’t very good,” Trump said. “And you have a governor who… doesn’t want to call anyone. He just wanted to let it burn. I sent a lot of people. You know, you should have waited for the governors to call them, but I didn’t wait. And if you look at Minneapolis, that place is on fire and we really stopped it. I wish I could have done it a lot earlier, but we finally did as well. We saved it and we saved Kenosha early. ”
