Kyle Rittenhouse’s lawyer accused prominent Republicans of trying to profit his client, calling it “disgusting.”
Rittenhouse, 18, was charged with homicide, attempted homicide and reckless endangering for killing two men and wounding a third with an AR-style semi-automatic rifle on a night of protests in August last year for shooting at a Black man, Jacob Blake, of a white policeman in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Rittenhouse traveled from his home in nearby Antioch, Illinois, to join other armed civilians on the streets, carrying weapons that authorities said were illegally purchased for him because he was a minor.
A jury on Friday acquitted Rittenhouse of all cases after Rittenhouse and his attorneys successfully defended that he acted in self-defense during a confrontation.
Rittenhouse attorney Mark Richards has called those who try to use Rittenhouse’s acquittal for their own purposes. “A lot of people are trying to make money here, and I don’t think they should,” Richards told the Insider.
Florida Rep. Said. Matt Gaetz that he is hoping for a not guilty verdict because Rittenhouse is “likely to be a good congressional intern.”
Rep. Later tweeted. Paul Gosar that he would “arm wrestle” with Gaetz to “get dibs for Kyle as an intern.”
Meanwhile, Rep. Live. Madison Cawthorn on Instagram to praise the verdict. “KYLE: IF YOU WANT AN INTERNSHIP, REACH OUT TO ME,” says the caption posted on the video.
Richards accused Republicans of attempting to “trade in [Rittenhouse’s] celebrity. “
“They’re raising money here and you have all the Republican congressmen saying to work for me,” he said. “They want to trade her celebrity and I think it’s disgusting.”

Richards also issued a rebuke to Donald Trump Jr. for encouraging people to support a gun rights organization that said it would “award” Rittenhouse an AR-15 for his “defense of gun rights.”
In a tweet that has since been deleted, Trump Jr. wrote: “America’s gun owners are sending Kyle Rittenhouse an AR-15. Sign the card in support of Kyle. Americans have fundamental right to defend themselves, and to keep and bear arms. The verdict in the trial of Kyle Rittenhouse is a recognition of those rights. “
“He’s an idiot,” Richards told the Insider. “I don’t have to expand on that because it speaks for itself.”
In another interview hours after the verdict, Richards said that “so many people are running around with guns in our society.
“I know people will go crazy when I say this — but there are so many guns in our society,” Richards told CNN’s Chris Cuomo on Friday.
“Hopefully our society isn’t considered so dangerous that people need to arm themselves.”
In the same interview, Richards said Rittenhouse asked “a hundred times” that he not go to Kenosha on the night of the deadly shootings, but he said his client had no “regrets for what he did that night under of those situations. “
Richards was contacted for further comment. Representatives for Gaetz, Gosar, Cawthorn and Trump Jr. was also contacted for comment.
