Former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany wrote in her new memoir that she found former President Donald Trump positive for COVID-19 while interviewing Trump live on Fox News on October 1, 2020.

McEnany was informed over the phone by an aide of Trump’s chief of staff at the time, Mark Meadows, that Trump’s rapid test had been positive and he was awaiting results from a PCR test to make sure he had not received a false positive. . McEnany said he asked the aide if Trump knew of his positive test result but the aide did not know.

“Did I learn this information before President Trump?” he says he wondered to himself, and added that he was in “total and utter disbelief.”

The Wall Street Journal reported on October 4, 2020, that Trump knew he had received a positive rapid test before he went to Fox News. The president confirmed in his interview with Sean Hannity that night that his close aide Hope Hicks was infected with the virus and he was waiting for his own test results. Trump did not say if he was waiting for the result of the rapid or PCR test.

“I just went out to test. They just did. It’ll come back too, I guess-and the first lady also because we spend a lot of time with Hope and others,” he told Hannity, saying at another point: “If let’s quarantine or if we have, I don’t know. … Let’s see what happens. Who knows? “

A few hours later, Trump announced via tweet that he and first lady Melania Trump were both infected with the virus.

But Meadows, Trump’s fourth and final chief of staff, wrote in his upcoming memoir that Trump tested positive for COVID-19 on Sept. 26, three days before his first presidential debate against Joe Biden, held indoors, The Guardian reported on Wednesday. Meadows wrote that Trump subsequently tested the negative before the debate.

Fox News host Chris Wallace said Trump arrived late in the first presidential debate to be tested for COVID-19 at the venue. The hosts of the debate instead relied on the honor system.

Trump called the version of Meadows’ events “fake news” and said he had not had COVID-19 before the first debate.

“The story of me having COVID before, or during, the first debate was Fake News,” Trump wrote in a statement. “In fact, one test showed I didn’t have COVID before the debate.”

A spokesman for Trump did not immediately respond to the Insider’s request for comment.

McEnany wrote in “For Such a Time as This: My Faith Journey Through the White House and Beyond” that he assured Trump in a phone call that he was a “success” and that America would rally to him while waiting they have the results of his PCR tests.

The then 32-year-old press secretary wrote that he was “really scared” about what would happen to Trump and the country after the diagnosis. McEnany added that he worries for Trump as “a boss and friend I have known and loved.”

“For me, it’s not just the president of the United States who tested positive and was taken to a hospital,” he wrote.
