Anti-LGBTQ+ Congressman Devin Nunes has resigned to become CEO of Donald Trump’s media company.

Nunes, who represents California’s 22nd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, announced Monday that he will step down from office at the end of the year. Shortly thereafter, Trump Media & Technology Group released a statement saying Nunes would be its CEO.

The 10-term congressman is a Republican and has proven himself a staunch supporter of the former president in impeachment proceedings investigating Trump’s relationship with Russia. He represents a conservative, largely rural district in the San Joaquin Valley of central California. His record on LGBTQ+ rights is dismal; he has a string of zeros on the Congressional Scorecard of the Human Rights Campaign.

Nunes grew up on his family’s dairy farm in California, and he emphasized this background as part of his political identity. However, his father and brothers moved the operation to Iowa more than a decade ago, as detailed in an Esquire story in 2018, which Nunes sued, alleging it defamed him. Nunes later invested in a farm in California and sued a man who sought to prevent Nunes from calling himself a farmer on the election ballot. The congressman is also notorious for suing people who run Twitter accounts that make fun of him, including one who claims to be Nunes ’cow. The “cow” celebrated Nunes’ resignation from Congress.

It’s unclear exactly what Trump’s new media venture will consist of. It says it’s creating a social network, but Bloomberg news service columnist Matt Levine said, “so far there’s almost no sign that TMTG is actually building a social network or a streaming platform or whatever. thing. ” Also, a company called Digital World Acquisition Corp., which was strictly created to acquire other companies and merge with the Trump venture, is under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Nunes, who has no experience with technology, may appear in Congress because he fears losing the election next November, political observers suggest. His district is currently very Republican, but redistricting plans being considered by an independent commission in California will make it more competitive, FiveThirtyEight reports.

Now that he is stepping down, there will likely be a special election for someone to serve the remainder of his term, and the current district boundaries will still remain when this happens. California Gov. has not yet announced. Gavin Newsom when the special election will take place.
