Donald Parham went on ‘fencing response,’ according to the former trainer

The Chargers-Chiefs game on Thursday night featured an extremely scary moment involving Donald Parham’s tight end.

In the first quarter, Justin Herbert found Parham behind the end zone in the fourth down. Parham went down hard and seemed to hit his head on the turf. He ended up in an awkward, tough -looking position on the ground, and eventually had to be removed from the field on a stretcher.

It was a scary scene, though Sunday Night Football medicine analyst Mike Ryan, a former NFL head trainer, explained what probably happened to Parham. He believes Parham’s body underwent a so -called “fencing response” to a head injury.

“When a person experiences an impact strong enough to cause a traumatic brain injury (TBI), such as a concussion, their arm often goes into an unnatural position,” Healthline explains. “This position — arms outstretched or bent, usually in the air — follows impact and is known as the fencing response position. It lasts up to a few seconds after the collision. “

Parham is “in stable condition and being evaluated for a head injury,” after leaving Thursday night’s game, ESPN reports.

“I’m just hoping for the best. Parham has been an incredible teammate and an incredible friend. He was kind to everyone in that locker room, and everyone loved him, ”Justin Herbert said after the overtime loss to Kansas City. “Obviously it is very difficult to see him on the field. On Friday afternoon, Charger released an update on Parham’s status. After an overnight stay at UCLA Harbor Medical Center, he was diagnosed with a concussion, and was “likely to be discharged” the next day.
