Former president Donald Trump’s nephew fears he won’t stop his efforts to remain leader of the Republican Party and regain the U.S. presidency.
On Sunday, Mary Trump was asked about the former president’s statements during a “history tour” in Houston the previous day, in which she reiterated that she sent 10,000 troops to the Capitol during the Jan. 6 riots.
The 56-year-old psychologist told MSNBC’s Alex Witt that his uncle was given the opportunity to “muddy the water” and he was committed to being president again.
“There’s no bottom line here and she’s deeply concerned that she’s being given the opportunity to continue to muddy the water and honestly rewrite history, which is an incredibly dangerous moment for this country,” Ms Trump said.
“He is not doing this for any reason other than he believes it will allow him to continue to remain leader of the Republican Party and possibly regain power in this country,” he added.
When Witt asked him about the former president’s statements that there was “love in that crowd” at the Stop the Steal rally before the Capitol riot, Ms Trump said she didn’t believe she “understood” the love.
“I don’t think he understands what that word means, really,” Ms Trump said. “And I’m not kidding. I don’t really believe that Donald Trump understands what love is, what it feels like to love someone or be loved.
“Since no one understands that concept possibly equates to the violence, violence, racism, anti-American feelings expressed on January 6th during that violent uprising it is possible to confuse it with anything that resembles love, “he added.
He also called Mr Trump’s “history tour” —a series of rallies with former Fox News host Bill O’Reilly — a “falure” and added that the small crowd meant the former president’s popularity. becomes “especially irrelevant”.
“We saw how sad his rally with Bill O’Reilly was because people had to pay to go and clearly that’s not something a lot of people want to do,” he said.
Ms Trump has been a strong critic of her uncle and her family since the beginning of her presidency. He also wrote a book in 2020 titled Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man, which sold nearly a million copies on the day of its release.
