Former President Donald Trump filed a federal lawsuit Monday in an effort to prevent New York state Attorney General Letitia James from continuing to investigate his business.

James is conducting a civil investigation by the Trump Organization, focusing on where the company misappropriated the value of real estate assets to obtain favorable loan and insurance rates, while lowering its tax obligations. .

That investigation is reflected in a criminal investigation conducted by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr.’s office.

Trump, who is a Republican, said Vance and James, who are Democrats, were investigating him for political reasons, and called the probes “witch hunts.”

The U.S. District Court suit for New York’s Northern District, first reported by The New York Times, argues the investigation violates Trump’s constitutional rights.

It says that “James’ mission is guided only by political hatred and a desire to harass, intimidate, and retaliate against a private citizen whom he views as a political opponent.”

The suit painted Trump, his family and his business as victims of a “bitter crusade” by James, who “tirelessly bombarded” them with “inappropriate” subpoenas.

Multiple pages of the 30-page complaint focused on James ’tweets and past criticisms of the Trump administration.

Trump’s attorney Alina Habba, in a written statement said, “Letitia James is targeting President Trump with a frivolous disregard of the ethical and moral obligations he swore to fulfill when he became Attorney General . “

“He briefly altered the state by initiating this partisan investigation and forever tarnished the sanctity of his office,” Habba said. “By filing this lawsuit, we intend not only to hold him accountable for his outright constitutional violations, but to stop his bitter crusade to punish his political opponent in its paths.”

A spokesman for James did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
