Trump has sued NY Attorney General Letitia James for trying to stop the investigation into the Trump Organization

Former President Trump on Monday indicted New York Attorney General Letitia James in federal court in an effort to stop his long -running civil investigation into his business practices.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in New York’s Northern District, argues that James’ questioning of Trump’s business dealings, which lasted more than two years, violated the former president’s constitutional rights.

“Letitia James is targeting President Trump with a frivolous disregard for the ethical and moral obligations he swore to fulfill when he became Attorney General,” Trump attorney Alina Habba said in a statement Monday.

“He briefly altered the state by initiating this partisan investigation and forever tarnished the sanctity of his office,” Habba added.

Habba said that by filing the lawsuit Monday, Trump’s legal team intends to “not only hold him accountable for his outright constitutional violations, but to stop his bitter crusade to punish his political opponents in its paths. ”

The lawsuit came after James asked, earlier this month, Trump’s testimony in the ongoing civil investigation into his business practices.

James’ office reportedly asked Trump to sit for a deposition on Jan. 7.

After the lawsuit was filed, James issued a statement criticizing the filing as another “delay” in his investigation.

“The Trump Organization continues to seek to postpone our investigation into its business dealings and now Donald Trump and his namesake company have filed a lawsuit as an attempted collateral attack on that investigation,” James said in statement on Monday.

“To be clear, neither Mr. Trump nor the Trump Organization can dictate if and where they will be held accountable for their actions,” he continued. “Our investigation will continue unabated because no one is above the law, not even someone named Trump.”

The attorney general’s office noted Monday that in August 2020, James filed a motion to compel the Trump Organization to provide his office with documents and testimony from witnesses about various “specific” allegations. ownership and transactions of the Trump Organization.

“Since then, the court has ruled several times in favor of Attorney General James,” his office said Monday.
