According to committee members, most of those contacted agreed to cooperate. Some of those closest to Donald Trump, however, resisted. They cited executive privilege, a legal principle that protects honest communications between presidents and their advisers. Two so far, Trump’s confidant Steve Bannon and former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, have been cited by the House for contempt in Congress. Bannon faces a criminal trial next year. Others, such as former Trump adviser Roger Stone and Trump ally Alex Jones have called on the Fifth Amendment to avoid answering questions on their role.
