Former President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he will host a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Jan. 6, a year after a mob of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol.

“Why isn’t the Unselect Committee of highly partisan political hacks investigating the CAUSE of the protest on January 6, which was the rigged 2020 Presidential Election?” Trump wrote in a statement.

Trump is clearly referring to the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol, which interviewed at least 300 people and recently discovered text messages from Donald Trump Jr., hosts of Fox News, and lawmakers to the former White House leader. of staff Mark Meadows on the day of the attack.

The former president even said the committee wanted to “stay away from” claims of a 2020 presidential election as much as possible before asking supporters to “see what’s happening now” in some U.S. states. It is not clear what Trump is referring to.

He went on to criticize “RINOs” – an acronym for “Republican in Name Only” – perhaps referring to his opponents within the party, such as Republican Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, who sat on the committee on Jan. 6.

“In many ways a RINO is worse than a Radical Left Democrat,” Trump said, “because you don’t know where they’re coming from and you have no idea how much they really belong in our Country.”

He added: “The good news is there are fewer RINOs left as we elect strong Patriots who love America.” Trump endorsed a major challenger to Cheney, and he and other Republicans moved to punish the 13 House Republicans who voted for the party leadership and voted for a bipartisan infrastructure bill last month.

“I’m going to have a news conference on January 6th in Mar-a-Lago to discuss all of these points, and more,” he said. “Until then, remember, the insurrection took place on the 3rd of November, it was the completely unarmed protest of the rigged election that took place on the 6th of January.”

Despite Trump’s statements, many of his supporters were armed when they stormed the Capitol nearly a year ago. About 140 officers were injured in the attack, and five people were killed in the riot. Officer Michael Fanone, a DC police officer who responded to the riot, said in July that he was dragged and beaten unconsciously by Trump loyalists.

More than 700 people have been charged in connection with the riot.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced in a “Dear Colleague” letter on Monday that Congress will seek to mark that day’s events with a “full program of events.”

Those events, according to Pelosi, will include discussions with historians about the “narrative of that day,” an opportunity for members of Congress to share experiences and reflections from that day, and safeguards. He added that the events will be livestream.

“As always, we will continue to work with the House Historian to establish and maintain our records in this matter,” Pelosi said.

The White House also said it plans to mark that day, though no details were given. The U.S. Senate is scheduled to be in session Jan. 6, though a senator has expressed reservations about those plans.
