Analysis: The best thing Donald Trump has done in years

Former President Donald Trump has done so much damage to America over the past five years-mainly by inciting the false statement that the 2020 election was stolen.

But, earlier this week, he did something really good. In an interview with conservative commentator Candace Owens, Trump not only denied his statements that “more people have died” since the Covid-19 vaccine became available but also delivered a clear argument for vaccinating people.

“No, the vaccine worked,” Trump said. “But some people don’t get it. Those who get sick and go to the hospital are the ones who don’t get their vaccine.” He added: “People don’t die when they take their vaccine.”

This is, of course, exactly correct. Study after study has shown that three doses of the Covid-19 vaccine continue to do a very good job at protecting you from hospitalization and death-even from the Omicron variant that is spreading across the country. .

But, it’s also very important for Trump to say that fact because the numbers also show that not only are Republicans less likely to be vaccinated than Democrats, but they also don’t understand the risks the virus poses to them. .

Now, it’s very important to note here that Trump could have been a stronger public advocate for vaccines and boosters sooner. And that by arming the virus (as well as covering it up) for political gain, he is at least responsible for Republicans refusing the vaccine.

As CNN’s Zach Wolf noted earlier this month: “The blue states that voted for President Joe Biden are typically over 60% vaccinated. The red states that went for former President Donald Trump are usually in below that average.

It’s unclear if Trump’s defense of vaccines is enough to change the minds of some of his ardent supporters. The former President was booed earlier this week when he admitted he received a booster and the issue had, for many of those not vaccinated, turned into a political issue rather than a public health one.

But, Trump still deserves some credit here – regardless of his reasons for advocating for the vaccine. (I’d like to think it’s because she believes in science but The New York Times’ Maggie Haberman has some other thoughts.)

The Point: For someone who has rarely done the right thing over the past few years, Trump deserves credit for doing that exactly here.
