Trump endorsed Alaska Gov. Dunleavy – if he doesn’t support Murkowski

Former President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he is endorsing the re -election of GOP Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy, as long as Dunleavy does not support Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) in her career.

Murkowski was one of seven Republican senators who voted to condemn Trump earlier this year in an article inciting insurrection in connection with the deadly Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. He is just one of those seven to come for re -election next year.

Trump did not mention Murkowski’s impeachment vote in an emailed statement from his Save America PAC, which initially stated that Dunleavy “had Complete and Total Endorsement” before adding that support was “subject to his non-endorsement of Senator Lisa Murkowski has been very bad for Alaska, including the loss of ANWAR, perhaps the most important drilling area in the world, and much more. “

“In other words,” Trump emphasized, “if Mike endorses him, which is his prerogative, my endorsement of him is void, and has no force or effect!”

The 45th president endorsed Murkowski’s main rival Kelly Tshibaka in June and he promised to travel to Alaska to personally campaign against the incumbent.

Dunleavy, who has been closely aligned with Trump since taking office in 2018, is trying to become the first Republican Alaska governor to win re-election since 1978.

This year, Alaska will conduct nonpartisan “forestry primarys” in its elections. The top four who get the vote will advance from the primary ballot to the general election in November, where the ranking-choice voting will be used to determine a winner.

While the former president has repeatedly fought against Murkowski, the senator has overcome challenges from his right side in the past. In 2010, he became the first senator to win re-election as a write-in candidate after losing the GOP primary to attorney Joe Miller.

Dunleavy’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
