The House Committee investigating Jan. 6 postponed the request for some Trump documents

The House Committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riots has reached an agreement with the White House to defer its request for hundreds of documents from the Trump administration.

White House deputy counsel Jonathan Su wrote in a letter to the committee on Dec. 16 that the agreements “reflect the ongoing efforts of the Executive and Legislative Branches to ensure that the legitimate needs of the Select Committee are met. met while maintaining the important prerogatives of the Executive Branch, such as the need for confidentiality in the president’s decision -making ”.

Legislators on the committee on Jan. 6 requested a wide range of communications from White House officials through the National Archives and other means, and sought to get a complete view of the actions and discussions of the members of the White House, federal government and the Trump campaign were involved in prior to the attack on the Capitol building.

Former president Donald Trump has tried to block this repeatedly by mentioning executive privilege. Mr Trump also informed the National Archives that he insisted on executive privilege.

But president Joe Biden said the privilege should not be applied. Mr Biden told the National Archives they could return a preliminary batch of documents covering the former president’s actions and communications on January 6.

In a final effort, Mr Trump filed a petition with the Supreme Court last week for an order to stop the committee’s requests for records; his previous attempts to do so at the federal and appeals levels were well rejected by the judges. The suit said the House Committee subpoena was “invalid” and the material should be protected by executive privilege.

“The documents by which the Select Committee has agreed to withdraw or postpone its request appear to have nothing to do with the White House’s preparations for or responding to the events of Jan. 6, or in efforts to withdraw the election or otherwise hinder the peaceful transfer of power, ”Mr Su said.

Su ultimately said the withholding of the documents “should not compromise it [committee’s] ability to complete its critical investigation quickly. “
