Trump supports Alaska Gov. Dunleavy for re -election – as long as Dunleavy does not support the re -election of fellow Republican Murkowski to the Senate

Former President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he would endorse Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy for re -election, but if the governor does not support U.S. Sen. bid. Lisa Murkowski to return to the Senate.

Trump praised Dunleavy for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and his “pushback against the Liberal Biden Administration.” But Trump has said he will not support Dunleavy if the governor recommends Alaska’s senior senator for re -election.

“In other words, if Mike endorses him, which is his prerogative, my endorsement of him is void and void, and there is no more force or effect!” Trump said in a statement tweeted by his spokeswoman, Liz Harrington.

Trump vowed revenge against Murkowski and other Republican lawmakers who supported his impeachment in the insurgency on Jan. 6. He endorsed Murkowski’s main challenger, Kelly Tshibaka.

Murkowski is the only Republican senator facing re-election next year to vote to convict Trump in his impeachment trial, even though seven Senate Republicans voted in favor of convicting Trump. The race will be closely watched across the country as an indicator of Trump’s long -term influence on GOP voters after his 2020 election defeat and whether they are willing to punish lawmakers they believe were unfaithful to the former president.

Murkowski also called for Trump’s resignation after the insurgency, in which hundreds of his supporters passed through the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to prevent certification of President Joe Biden’s election victory.

Separately, Alaska Lt. said. Gov. Kevin Meyer that he will not run for re -election next year.
