The Republican Party is paying millions for Trump’s legal bills. Here’s why

There is no precedent for this.

This-just a kind of retreat and explain why there is no precedent. President – former President Trump is not a Republican candidate. He is not a Republican officeholder. And the investigations he faces have nothing to do with his tenure. They all came first – they focused on his business in the years before he ran for president. So there is no connection to the Republican Party or Republican officeholders involved here.

But the Republican Party is still paying this money. And, obviously, Trump has a pot of money in his package. He has money in his business. He can afford it, but they still pay his bills.

And what they’re saying, what the Republican Party is saying, is, well, we see it as a political attack on Trump, a famous Republican. These are the Democrats to take him to New York. And so we were happy to pay his bills.

What I think is really happening here is that Trump, even though he’s out of office and not running, is a linchpin in Republican fundraising efforts. He is the key to the future of RNC fund-raising. And if he comes back to them, if he leaves, if he speaks badly about them, that might be harmful.

So they may be paying to keep him in theirs – to keep themselves in his good graces.
