To the editor: The Times reported that Park Geun-hye, the former president of South Korea, has been pardoned after spending nearly five years in prison for corruption, abuse of power and taking bribes. In Israel, former President Moshe Katsav and former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert were each convicted and sent to prison.
In true democracies no one – not even former presidents or prime ministers – is above the law. What President Trump did then after the 2020 election was even worse than the foreign cases mentioned above.
At the state, county and city levels in states with Republican governors, Trump and his enablers are systematically hitting the very root of the nation’s democratic system and institutions. However, Trump is allowed to roam the country selling Big Lie about the stolen election and consider re-running for president in 2024.
Isn’t there still enough evidence to make federal charges against Trump? What else is the Department of Justice waiting for? County and local officials were convicted and thrown in jail for less serious actions.
