The GOP has spent most of the past year removing the authority of state and local election officials as part of the party’s ongoing efforts to destroy faith in U.S. democracy, following the failed re -election of Donald Trump.
With Trump and his supporters continuing to lie about the 2020 presidential election and criticizing election officials for refusing to join in attempts to overturn the results, it should come as no surprise, according to a report published by Reuters on Thursday, these local officials have been subject to a steady flow of abuse and threats since the 2020 presidential election.
The report contains more than 850 threats and hostile messages covering 30 jurisdictions in 16 states. Law professors and attorneys say about 110 of them appear to warrant federal prosecution.
In one such message, one caller said, “We will follow you and every rude person who stole this election with our Second Amendment. Subpoenas are doomed… You will be given the lead. ”
Another caller threatened: “You cannot run for governor when you are dead. We will hang you for treason, you bitch. Go down.”
In addition to election officials, members of Congress were also caught in the “Trump hate tunnel,” as Rep. Said. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.). Even Republicans have received death threats for supporting bipartisan infrastructure legislation.
Unlike the GOP-led “audits” of 2020 election results in battlefield states like Arizona, which were obviously ridiculous at first and out of place, the party’s focus on boards of elections and other often overlooked roles in the electoral process can actually be fruitful. And the amount of and vitriol contained in voicemails to election officials seems to show how important its efforts are to Trump’s base goal of getting him back in office.
Meanwhile, Ted Cruz and others are likely to continue to spread lies about voting, and then try to justify what his party is doing by claiming that many Americans are just skeptical about in the election process, it is well known who is responsible for sowing those. doubt in the first place.
