US President Joe Biden has marked a year since the Jan. 6 deadly attack on the Capitol by condemning political violence in a speech in the country, while he also lashed out at the former president.
On January 6, 2021, Donald Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in Washington DC, put 15 police officers in the hospital and caused millions of dollars worth of damage.
Politicians were forced to run for safety and five people were killed as mobs tried to disrupt Mr Biden’s election victory certification.

Hit Trump
Marking a year since the event, Mr Biden has launched a vicious attack on Donald Trump.
Speaking from the U.S. Captiol Statuary Hall, he said the former president was “spreading a web of lies” about the election.
“He did it because he values power more than principle,” Mr Biden said.
Following the riots, Mr Trump was accused of encouraging rioters to march on the Capitol after false claims that Mr Biden’s victory against him in the election was “stolen”.
He added: “He sees his own interests as more important than the interests of his country and the interests of America. And because his bruised ego is more important to him than our democracy or our constitution.”
“He will accept that he lost.
“Even if that’s what 93 U.S. senators said, his own attorney general, his own vice president, Governors and state officials in every state on the battlefield … he lost. That’s what 81 did. millions of you as you vote for a new way forward. “
Mr Biden continued: “He has done what the president has never done in American history. He has refused to accept the results of an election.”
Condemnation of political violence
In his speech, Mr Biden also asked Americans to close their eyes and remember what they saw on this date last year.
He described the painful, violent scene, mobs attacking police, threatening a House speaker, erecting a gallows threatening to hang the vice president – while then -President Trump sat in the White House watching it on TV.
“Here’s God’s truth about 6 January 2021,” Mr Biden said. “They are looking to destroy the Constitution.”

He asked the nation who they wanted to be as he contemplated the deadly event.
He said: “And at this moment we have to decide what kind of country we are.
“Will we be a country that accepts political violence as the norm?

“Will we be a country where we allow partisan election officials to reverse the legally expressed will of the people?
“Will we be a nation that lives not in the light of truth but in the shadow of lies?”
He continued: “We cannot allow ourselves to be that kind of country.
“The way forward is to recognize the truth and live it.”
Trump responded
The former president issued a statement in response to Mr Biden’s statements, attacking the Democrat leadership.
He said: “Biden, who is destroying our Country through insane open border policies, corrupt elections, destructive energy policies, unconstitutional mandates, and destructive school closures, has used my name now to try to divide America further.

“This political theater is just a distraction for the fact Biden has completely and utterly failed.
“Our country no longer has borders, has completely and utterly lost control of COVID (record numbers!), Is no longer energy independent, inflation is rampant, our military is in turmoil, and our exit, or surrender, from Afghanistan, is perhaps the most embarrassing day in the long and well -known history of the United States – and much more. “
He added that Democrats “want to own this day of January 6 so that they can provoke fears and divide America. I say, let them have it because America sees their lies and polarization”.
Divide between the parties
A series of commemorative events will be attended by Democrats throughout the day, personally and virtually, but almost every Republican on Capitol Hill is absent – a stark reminder of the division between the two parties.
Although a majority of Republicans in congress condemned the attack shortly after it happened, most remained loyal to Mr Trump.
In December, the former president was defeated in an attempt to protect documents from the House committee’s investigation into the riots at the Capitol.
Documents including presidential diaries, visitor logs and speech drafts were ordered to be released after the appeals court rejected Mr Trump’s arguments to keep the documents sealed.
The panel investigating the riots later revealed that Donald Trump Jr. texted the White House chief of staff during the Capitol riot, telling him that his father needed to “condemn the s ** * this soon “.
