Biden just gave the strongest rebuke to Trump’s coup – but what will he do about it?

I don’t think anyone has said yet that Joe Biden is a great orator. In fact, he’s probably one of the less intelligent presidential speakers I remember. Perhaps George Bush Sr. is also moderate, but that doesn’t say much. However, yesterday, on the 6th of January, Joe Biden gave the best speech I have ever heard from him and I suspect it can really be remembered as an important speech. The speech marked the change in both tone and substance to something very important that would have signaled a new approach to try and save our democracy.

Despite opening his campaign in 2019 with strong condemnation of President Trump’s unscrupulous behavior and a call to “restore America’s soul,” Biden hasn’t spoken much about the Republic’s continued threat to democracy since when he took his seat. And he carefully avoids talking about Donald Trump because the White House has reportedly felt afraid to further raise the former president’s embarrassment. But the January 6th anniversary is the day they decided to put democracy at the top of the agenda-and it’s not too early.

Biden’s speech is fiery and effective in rhetoric. Despite never using his predecessor’s name, he took the fight against Trump, something that is inevitable whether the White House likes it or not. Biden was perfect for the jugular, provoked Trump 16 times in the speech, called him a “defeated former president” (emphasis on the word defeated), declaring that Trump’s excessive ego would not allow him to admit that he was defeated. And that’s the truth – Donald Trump is the biggest loser in world history.

The former president of the United States of America created and spread a web of lies about the 2020 election. He did it because he values ​​power over principle. Because he sees his own interests as more important than the interests of his country, than the interests of America. And because his bruised ego is more important to him than our democracy or our Constitution. He could not accept that he was lost.

Biden almost certainly has some real hope that he can bridge the bipartisan divide when he takes office and he is determined to try it out in old college. She finished the towel. He clarified that the Republican Party is just as guilty as Trump. While praising those who stood up for democracy (which we can count on on the one hand), he said this about the others:

So many others are swapping that party for something else. They don’t seem to want to be the party of Lincoln, Eisenhower, Reagan, the Bushes anymore.

Nor did they want to be the party of the prince of darkness, former Vice President Dick Cheney, who showed up at the Capitol for the commemoration and stood next to his daughter, the only two Republicans to attend. (Of course, the right-wing media immediately choked on his throat.)

He also did not abandon the MAGA cult, which I think is bold:

Those who invaded this Capitol, and those who incited and incited, and those who called upon them to do so, held a dagger to the throat of America and American democracy. They did not come here because of patriotism or principle. They came here in anger – not to serve America but to serve someone.

You can’t love your country when you win. You can’t follow the law when it’s convenient. You can’t be patriotic when you embrace and enable lies.

Naturally it was immediately slammed by Republicans who were proudly holding their pearls and saying it was “dividing” (nothing new there) and whispering that Biden was “politicizing” on Jan. 6, which is ridiculous. No one but former House Speaker Newt Gingrich had the courage to provoke Lincoln to slap Biden, however – and mess it up badly:

If you read Lincoln’s Second Inaugural and Biden’s speech today, you will understand the difference between the greatness that unites us and an evil spirit of vicious partisan hacks that is trying to cause a deeper wedge in the country should his leadership.

Gingrich had to reread that speech:

The undisputed leader of the modern Republican Party, Donald Trump, himself issued cheerful statements in which he said “Biden used my name today to try to further divide America,” and claimed to have listened to him is “very painful to many people.” (He also goes through his usual litany of lies about the 2020 election in tedious, addictive detail, as he does most days.)

Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., And his pal Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., Held a small press conference with no one watching where they released conspiracy theories about the FBI that started of insurrection and otherwise communicated incoherently.

Biden said we are at an inflection point in history and I agree. Our politics are not normal and they are not improving. If anyone thinks Trump’s departure from office will “break the fever” they need a new thermometer. The question now is what is he – and what are we going to do – about it?

Biden will travel to Georgia next week to talk about voting rights law and the desperate need to strengthen our electoral system. Will he be able to rally the two divas in the Senate, Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin, on purpose and persuade them to allow a filibuster exception to save our democracy? At this point, that’s really the only question, isn’t it?
