Donald R. Boyer, 98, Houghton Lake, died Jan. 1, 2022, at the East Bay Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center in Clearwater, FL.

The internment is at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL.

He was born on August 20, 1923, in Johnstown, PA, to Wesley Leroy and Ethel Mae (Peters) Boyer.

He graduated from Franklin Borough High School in May of 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy as a pilot during World War II (1942 to 1946), flying rescue missions and submarine patrols on a PBM-5A Flying Boat plane over the Ocean. Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico.

After the war, he moved to Michigan and married Doris Mae Derkaz on June 16, 1949, in Royal Oak. He was preceded in death by his wife on July 7, 2014.

Mr. Boyer enjoyed hunting and fishing, along with other outdoor recreation and, in 1957, was elected mayor of Tip-up Town. He is a founding member of the 8-80 Hunt Club.

In 1952, he owned the North Shore Septic Service and, soon, partnered in the design and building of what is now the Redwood Golf Course between Houghton Lake and Higgins Lake. His career included working for the Two Lakes Building Company.

His community involvement includes serving for 10 years on the Roscommon County Road Commission, serving on the Roscommon County Board of Commissioners and as president of the Houghton Lake Community Schools Board of Education.

After he retired, he and his wife spent the winter in Florida, eventually moving to live in Florida.

He was preceded in death besides his wife, Doris, his siblings, Sarah (Warren) McClain, Wesley Boyer and Ruth (infant death).

Survivors are her three children Deborah (Dale), Diane (Carl) and Donald (Barbara). The family also includes nine grandchildren, Dan (Kelly), Doug (Beka), Diana, Dawn, Michael, Jacob, Anna, Katie and David; and a great -grandson, Owen.
