We just didn’t win the election for the presidency: GOP senator says there is no evidence for Trump’s claims

A Republican senator who broke public with former President Donald Trump amid recent false claims about the 2020 election worked on Sunday to re-declare that the former president lost fairly to Joe Biden.

As the nation’s attention is focused on the one-year anniversary of the attack on the U.S. Capitol, senator Mike Rounds joined ABCs This Sunday to dispel the lies that Mr Trump and his loyalists continue to spread inside of the GOP about his defeat.

“We didn’t just win the election, as Republicans, for the presidency, Mr Rounds said on Sunday.

He then warned that Mr Trump’s lies were only intended to undermine his own confidence in supporters in U.S. elections, while Democrats and independents who did not believe him continued to vote and participate in the system as normal.

[I]f we simply look back and tell our people don’t vote because there’s cheating going on, then we are going to put ourselves in a huge disadvantage, said the senator. [L]et’s focus on what it takes to win those elections. We can do it. But we need to let people know that they can – they can believe and they can have confidence that the elections are fair. “

Mr Rounds issued a statement just after the unrest in the Capitol in January stating that although he remained open-minded when listening to objections to the Electoral College votes of individual states targeted by Trump’s campaign with allegations of fraud, he found no reason to support those objections before the Senate because Mr Trump’s supporters failed to provide any specific evidence of fraud.

At the time, he denounced those opposed to the Electoral College vote counts as violating the spirit of U.S. democracy.

Without so much evidence of constitutional violations in an election process, objecting to the vote count in the Electoral College is dangerous and unwise. It flies in front of our Founding Fathers, whose individual states intend to run their own election processes and entrust the adjudication of election disputes to the courts, he said in January.

Mr Rounds reiterated on Sunday during his interview with ABC News that he had listened to supposed evidence of widespread election fraud released by Mr Trump’s allies, and was not convinced.

“While there are some irregularities, none of the irregularities can rise to the point where they change the result of a vote in a state,” he said.

Those comments reflect statements made by senior federal officials appointed by Mr Trump himself, including former Secretary of State William Barr, who in the days after the 2020 election sought to rebuke the public vote manipulation statements circulated by former supporters of the presidents.

Officials including Mr Barr have declared the 2020 election the most secure in U.S. history, and subsequent state-level investigations in several jurisdictions across the country where fraud allegedly failed to reflect the large levels of irregularities that Mr Trump’s campaign asserted had occurred.
