Republican Senator Mike Rounds made a MAGA heresy on Sunday: He said Joe Biden’s win over Donald Trump in 2020 was part of a fair election, contradicting Trump’s lies about a rigged election. Appearing on This Week, the senator said, “The election was fair, as fair as we have seen. We didn’t just win the election, as Republicans, for the presidency. “
Rounds said he reviewed numerous allegations of voter fraud and dismissed them all as baseless. “As part of our due diligence, we looked at more than 60 different accusations made in multiple states,” senator told host George Stephanopoulos. “While there are some irregularities, none of those irregularities can rise to the point where they change the result of a vote in a state.”

Rounds, who voted to prove Biden’s victory, was pretty consistent with his messaging that the election was not stolen. He argued that placing Trump in the election process as full of fraud is detrimental to Republicans ’electoral chances in the coming midterms. “If we just go back and tell our people,‘ Don’t vote because there’s cheating going on, ’we’re putting ourselves at a huge disadvantage,” he said. “So, moving forward, let’s focus on what it takes to win those elections. We can do it.”
But even after directly opposing Trump, Rounds refused to say he would not support Trump in case he seeks a second term in 2024. “I’ll look at it carefully. Personally, what I told people was, will I support the Republican nominee to be president, “he said, adding,” I’m not sure the last nominee showed up yet. “
Rounds also said he would oppose a law designed to keep Trump out of office but said the former president is vulnerable to Justice Department criminal prosecution. “Every individual in the United States is subject to court systems. What happens to a president is that he has a shield of office, which, in many instances, prohibits or limits the ability of the courts to address the issues surrounding it. … That presidential shield doesn’t exist for a former president, ”he said, adding the caveat that he doesn’t believe the DOJ has even presented any destructive evidence against Trump.
Asked if he would support the prosecution if investigators could find evidence against former Pres. Trump said, @SenatorRounds, “It’s not up to a member of the Senate to support the prosecution … the Department of Justice will take care of that decision.” https://t.co/hVf8ZTSPjc pic.twitter.com/c0FfbvsLeA

While Rounds condemned the attack on the Capitol in January. 6 and even said Trump could be criminally charged for it, the senator stopped supporting impeachment and voted against convicting Trump in the Senate for his actions around the attack on the Capitol.
