“The United States Senate is one of our most important democratic institutions, and the power given to the minority in the Senate and the resulting need for political consensus are among the defining features of the Senate,” Romney said while speaking on the Senate floor. .

“Remember that in the federal government, minority empowerment is established by only one institution: the Senate,” he said. “The majority decides in the House; the majority decides in the Supreme Court; and the president, of course, a majority of one. Only in the Senate does the minority suppress the power of the majority.”

Romney insisted that the power given to the minority was “critical” because it helped to ensure that laws passed in the Senate appealed to both political parties and did not “come from the extreme wing of either one.” Without the filibuster, tax measures, safety and national security programs would change whenever another party gets a majority, Romney said.

“There’s also a reasonable chance that Republicans will win both houses in Congress, and that Donald Trump himself could be re -elected president in 2024,” he continued. “Did the Democrats think what it meant for them for the Democratic minority without any power?”

The Utah senator also accused his fellow Democrats of hypocrisy, pointing to their frequent use of the filibuster when they were in the minority in the past.

“Throughout my life, I have found that when presented with something of personal advantage that would require the abandonment of principles, the human mind has gone overtime to rationalize the taking of that advantage, ” he says.

Romney also criticized Biden’s speech on voting rights in Georgia, in which the president said Republicans sought to make the will of the voters just a suggestion.

“And so, President Biden went through the same tragedy that President Trump went through that questioned the reliability of American elections,” Romney said. “This is a sad, sad day. I look forward to more from President Biden, who came into office with the stated goal of uniting the country.”

Biden clarified on Tuesday that he supports changing Senate rules to pass voting rights legislation.

“I believe the threat to our democracy is so severe that we need to find a way to pass voting rights bills,” he said in Atlanta.

“And if that bare minimum is blocked, we have no option but to change the Senate rules, including getting rid of the filibuster for this,” he added.
