President Donald Trump predicted at a closed door fundraiser on Tuesday that Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-NY, will “be president in about 6 years.”
Trump’s praise for Stefanik, first reported by The New York Post, came on the heels of the New York congresswoman emerging as one of her most ardent defenders.
“I want to congratulate Elise on her success,” Trump said, according to the Post. “Man is she moving fast. That means at this rate he’ll be president in about 6 years.”
Stefanik voted against certifying the results of the 2020 election on the day of the insurrection on Jan. 6 and he defended Trump’s voter fraud lies, often under the guise of “tens of millions of Americans” without confident in the legitimacy of President Joe Biden’s success.
He was also tapped to take the leadership position of House GOP’s Rep. Liz Cheney after the Wyoming congresswoman reaped anger at Trump for calling her election lies and voting for her second impeachment.
However, before he was re-elected in 2018, Stefanik was less supportive of Trump and occasionally criticized him, sometimes on hidden terms. He also voted against his signature piece of legislation, the 2017 tax reform bill.
One particular part of the bill – the state and local taxes or SALT reductions – he cited as his main reason for voting against the final package.
“While progress was made during the conference committee, the final bill did not adequately protect the State and Local Tax cuts that so many in our district and throughout New York trust,” Stefanik wrote in a press release prior to the House voting on the pay. “Because of Albany’s failed leadership and inability to control spending, New York is one of the highest taxed states in the nation, and families here rely on this important deduction to meet needs. The failure to maintain SALT could lead to more families leaving our region. “
During the 2016 campaign, Stefanik expressed concerns about Trump’s rhetoric.
“Unfortunately, this has tapped into today’s fear of our security situation.” she said in January 2016. “I think we should expect more substance out of our candidates.”
Stefanik also raised his profile by frequently attacking former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo as well as his staff, including his former high school classmate Melissa DeRosa, then Cuomo’s top aide.
Before the inauguration of Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York in 2019, Stefanik is the youngest woman elected to Congress after her victory in 2014. She has dedicated most of her career in Washington to recruiting more women to run for office on the side of the GOP
Despite a Democratic supermajority in Albany having the final say on the Empire State’s district change map, Stefanik is likely to remain in a safe seat thanks to his vast 21st district across the Upstate North Country region. New York.
