In the last months of the campaign in 2020, Trump began to spin the canard that, if the vote didn’t go to him, that would be the only proof that the election was stolen. In the weeks after President Joe Biden’s victory, Trump tried to intimidate election officials, pushed false lawsuits, leaned on state lawmakers to tamper with state voting results and conspired with his henchmen. to destroy the political process in any way possible. Everything was cut off in January. 6, 2021, when he unleashed a violent mob in the U.S. Capitol to stop the electoral count.

In the year since he stepped down from the White House without attending his successor’s inauguration, Trump has devoted himself to promoting the Big Lie and directing his anger at any Republican who dares to state the truth about the outcome. of the election.

Quiet about the seditious schemes of his predecessor for a year, President Biden has finally recognized the real danger Trump posed for the country.

“And here’s the truth,” the president said in a speech on the Jan. 6 anniversary. “The former president of the United States of America created and spread a web of lies about the 2020 election. He did it because he values power than principle, because he sees his own interests as more important than the interests of his country and the interests of America, and because his bruised ego is more important to him than our democracy or our Constitution. Trump has long displayed authoritarian tendencies. As president, he showed obvious admiration for autocrats, particularly Russian President Vladimir Putin. He wants to join the autocrats club and, in case he becomes president again, he will waste little time establishing his credentials for membership. That’s why most Americans should remain vigilant and say, in the words of fascism survivors in the 1940s, “Never again.”
