Former Republican operatives on the Lincoln Project are happily taking advantage of the latest GOP crackup, with an ad buy promoting a so-called “divorce” between Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
The place is a rerun. “Sad!” was first launched in September. But the context is newer, with Trump and DeSantis seemingly engaging in a Cold War rhetoric that could heat up at little notice.
The placements are deliberate and provocative, with ad purchases in Palm Beach, where Trump can see it, and Tallahassee, where the Governor can see it.
A co-founder of the group is contextualizing the latest purchase.
“At least Ron DeSantis shared one thing with Donald Trump: They’re both extremely dishonest,” said Lincoln Project co-founder Rick Wilson. “Ron DeSantis wanted to be President, and he declared war on Donald Trump. In the words of Dr. Ishiro Seriwaza, ‘Let them fight.'”
The 60-second spot troll Trump, with a female narrator saying, “People are trying to forget you … people you made … people like Ron DeSantis.”
“If you don’t, he doesn’t,” the narrator said. “A loser.”
“Everyone says he is bigger than you. Smarter than you. Thinner than you, “the narration continues, noting that DeSantis is” on Fox all the time. “
The rebooted ad came as speculation swirled that Trump and DeSantis were in a collision.
Asked about the reported crack – which includes Trump’s accounts attacking a “dull” DeSantis and Trump’s quotes attacking “disgusting” politicians who won’t say if they got booster vaccinations – DeSantis parsed his language in response. He diverted a question about his relationship with former President Trump.
“I think this is what the media does, and you can’t fall into the bait. You know what they’re trying to do. Don’t take the bait, and just keep going. We need to all unite for a big red wave in 2022, “said DeSantis.
He then said he should have been “stronger” in opposition to virus mitigation strategies such as lockdowns, launched in 2020 by the former President’s administration.
Trump predicted that if he runs again as President, DeSantis will not run. But DeSantis did not promise to bow to the race, which seemed to resent Trump. Instead, DeSantis tends to divert the question.
“It is far from the road. It’s not anything I’m planning on doing, ”DeSantis said in an appearance on the Fox News Channel last fall.
Reports suggest Trump is waiting for a stronger guarantee that DeSantis will clear the field for him, but that doesn’t seem to be imminent.
