Virat Kohli scored a good half -century but failed to kick when India lost in the opening ODI against South Africa via 31 runs at Boland Park in Paarl on Wednesday. Kohli played well before his innings ended early on 51 (63 balls) by Tabraiz Shamsi. Kohli has not scored in a century in more than two years in any format but the former South African fast bowler said “even the greatest has gone through a fall” and Virat Kohli will definitely “come back at some point.”
Speaking to www.telegraphindia.com, Allan Donald said the South African bowlers did well to put pressure on Kohli in the first ODI.
“I’m not sure if Virat was technically exposed, but South Africa cracked in key areas and let the pitch do the business when bowling with him. The bowlers were piled on the main pressure.
“Is Virat invincible? No. But even the best have gone through slump, because the game is a great leveler. Even Steve Smith hasn’t really been on fire since he came back after the ball-tampering issue. I know Virat’s standards and I’m sure he’ll come back some point. It won’t take long, “said the fast-bowling great.
When Kohli seemed to return to his best, he lost his wicket.
Kohli’s dismissal for 51 completely changed the game as the other Indian batters lost the plot.
Shikhar Dhawan and Kohli did very well to put the visitors at the top of the chase but after Kohli left, the wickets continued to beat India to finally lose the match.
Promoted
From 152/3 in 28.2 overs, India fell to 214/8 in 42.2 overs. Shardul Thakur struggled to an undefeated 50 on 43 balls but it was too late in the day that South Africa ran out of a comfortable win.
The second ODI between India and South Africa will be played at the same venue today.
