‘SNL’ Cold Open with Novak Djokovic, ‘How I Met Your Father’ and More – The Hollywood Reporter

Saturday Night Live’s latest cold open is filled with references to politics and pop culture from recent weeks – including Novak Djokovic, Wordle, How I Met Your Father, Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet, the green M&M and, of course, Donald Trump.

Kate McKinnon’s Laura Ingraham appeared in her version of The Ingraham Angle. Before welcoming some guests, Ingraham’s McKinnon stabbed Joe Biden’s presidency, saying everyone could agree that “it was a disaster.” He went on to list inflation, gas was $ 19 and green M&M, which was “canceled just for being a prostitute.”

Ted Cruz by Aidy Bryant, Djokovic by Pete Davidson, Candace Owens by Ego Nwodim and Donald Trump by James Austin Johnson were guests on the makeshift news show.

“The beard is still strong, huh” McKinnon’s Ingraham said as he introduced Bryant’s Cruz. “Oh, yes, my beard looks like January 6: Surprising at first, but sadly, it’s normalized.”

Bryant’s Cruz apologized for calling the Capitol Rioters “terrorists,” and said he shouldn’t call them that. “The truth is they’re big, muscular men with big D energy,” he said, adding that people should book their trips to Cancun as soon as possible because it’s getting cold soon. .

McKinnon’s Ingraham then hired Davidson’s Djokovic, who negotiated deportation from Australia for refusing to be vaccinated. “I never thought I would hear myself use the word deported in a bad way,” McKinnon told Davidson. “My visa was denied, but then I appealed,” he told her, adding that the judge’s decision was “none.”

Next up was Nwodim’s Owens, who started his appearance on the show by saying, “Martin Luther King would have voted for Trump.”

“Liberals tried to do everything about race,” Nwodim’s Owens continued. “To quote the only words Martin Luther King said: ‘I have a dream.’ Ayan yun. End of quote. There’s nothing about money or work or school, unless you count his tombstone, which says, ‘Well done, gang racism is over.’ ”

Throughout the cold tomorrow, Ingraham thanked the sponsors he still has: COVID Negs, which give you a negative result, even if you are positive; White Pizza “for when Italian is too ethnic”; the Bible belt; and Paula Deen’s Chickpea Mash, “non -radical Islamic hummus.”

The last guest of his show was Donald Trump’s Johnson, who played Wordle, featuring words like Boost, Mayer, HIMYF, Momoa and Prada, which led to the last word, “Trump.”

“I’d rather be mayor over anything,” Johnson’s Trump said, discussing the word Mayer, “than be Governor Ron DeSantis. I’d beat him hard if he opposed me, like I beat Hillary because that’s all we want Hilary’s is Duff from How I Met Your Father. ”

MacGruber star Will Forte is hosting the episode, with rock band Måneskin as the musical guest.

In Forte’s opening monologue, he was pleased with how he was the last of his former SNL co-workers to be asked to host a sketch series. As she tries to enjoy the moment, Kristen Wiig applauds the monologue with louder applause than Forte received. Wiig came out in sketches with Forte all night.

Lorne Michaels appeared, saying there was a mistake in asking Forte to host, and it really must have been Willem Dafoe, who also stopped by Studio 8H on Saturday night.

“I texted Willem, and, you know, autocorrect,” Michaels told Forte. (Dafoe is scheduled to host on Jan. 29).

In the Weekend Update, Davidson and Jost mentioned their purchase of a Staten Island Ferry: “We’re people on the boat, Colin.”
