Obituary

Donald Lee Weed, Sr., 78, of 5965 Appletree Point Road, New Hope, died Wednesday, Sept. 15,2021, surrounded by his children. He was born in Nunda and graduated from Moravia High School and became an Eagle Scout.

Following his Associates Degree from Cayuga Community College, he went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Pastoral Studies as well as a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration.

Donald worked with his father and siblings for many years at New Hope Mills and built the magnificent covered bridge to New Hope Mill. He has served as New Hope Firechief, pastor, deacon, teacher, school administrator, and mentor for many. Donald played a big role in working with his family to successfully build Schoolyard Sugarbush and loves to share his passion for maple sugaring.

He is survived by his wife of 7 years, Cheryl P. Weed; a daughter, Danielle (Jim) Main of Auburn; two sons, Donald Jr. (Rhonda) of Greenville, SC; and Daniel (Holly) of Watkins Glen; his sisters, Linette (George) Glover and Loretta, both of New Hope; a brother, Dale (Jan) of New Hope; eight grandchildren (Lyle, Lane, Carly, Grace, Lillian, Jachin, Adelyn, and Boaz) and 1 great -grandchild, Jaxon.

Don was honored to be the nephew of Ellsworth Downs, who will be 100 years old in celebration of Don’s life.

Donald is preceded in death by his wife, Sandra, who is 36 years old; parents, Leland and Lois Weed; and his brother David. Services: 3pm on Sunday, Sept. 19 at Grace Lee Memorial Wesleyan Church in Beaver Dams, NY. The interment will take place at 11am on Monday, Sept. 20 at New Hope Cemetery.
