Former U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed that he pardon some of those charged for their part in last year’s attack on the U.S. Capitol if he is re-elected in the 2024 presidential vote.

“If I run, and if I win, we will treat those people fairly from January 6. We will treat them fairly. And if it requires pardons, we will give them pardons because they were treated unfairly. them, ”Trump said at a rally Saturday night in Conroe, Texas.

Hundreds of Trump supporters stormed the U.S. legislature in Washington on Jan. 6 last year in an effort to block President Joe Biden’s certification of victory in the November 2020 election.

More than 700 people were arrested as part of the investigation into the riot that killed five people and left the country in turmoil. That list grows day by day as the extensive investigation progresses.

Most of the defendants were not charged with violence or vandalism but only for illegal entry into the building and generally faced misdemeanor charges.

However, some longer sentences have been reduced and more than the approximately 225 individuals accused of acts of violence could face serious repercussions in court.

Trump has repeatedly spoken out against prosecuting those who took part in the riot, but has yet to put pardons on the table before his Saturday rally.

The former president was accused of inciting violence in the Capitol in a fervent speech claiming election fraud, statements that have not been substantiated by the states in question, the Justice Department or U.S. courts.

A House of Representatives select committee is also at the center of investigating how the attack took place and whether Trump and members of his board played a part in encouraging it.

Trump hit the committee on Saturday, calling its work a “disgrace.”
