Mike Pence: Donald Trump is wrong to say he could have canceled the election

Former Vice President Mike Pence directly refuted Donald Trump’s false claims that Pence could somehow have annulled the results of the 2020 elections, and asserted that the president simply was “wronged.”

In a speech before the conservative Federalist Society in Florida, Pence spoke about Trump’s attempts to promote the false narrative that as vice president he could have done something to prevent Joe Biden from taking over.

Former President Trump “is wrong,” Pence said. “I had no right to cancel the election.”

Although in the past Pence has defended his actions related to January 6 and has said that he and Trump will probably never “agree” on what happened that day, the statements will mark his most contingent discrepancy with Trump to date.

And it comes at a time when Pence has already laid the groundwork for a possible candidacy for the presidency in 2024, which could put him in direct competition with his former boss, who has also stated the possibility of resigning.

In a statement, Trump said the committee investigating the Jan. 6 fatal attack in the Capitol should better investigate “why Mike Pence did not cast the votes for his certification or approval.”

He also arrested Pence, falsely claiming that “the elections could have been annulled.”

The vice -presidents only had a ceremonial role in the Electoral College’s vote, and any attempt to interfere with the recount would have represented a profound break with democratic precedents and norms.
