US Rep. Mike Rogers joined 28 of his House GOP colleagues on Wednesday in sponsoring a resolution to expunge Donald Trump’s second impeachment over the events of Jan. 6, which he called a “politically motivated sham.”
“Last year, Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi forced through the House, a politically motivated sham impeachment resolution against President Trump. It was the second time she made a mockery of our Constitutional duties by pursuing her vile witch hunt, ”Rogers said in a statement. “Because of her atrocious actions, I proudly join my colleagues in cosponsoring legislation that would expunge the unjust second impeachment against President Trump.”
The Republican sponsored resolution claims the impeachment resolution that charged Trump with inciting an insurrection “contains a subjective account of that which transpired at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 and leaves out “any discussion of the circumstances, unusual voting patterns, and voting anomalies of the 2020 Presidential election itself.”
The resolution goes on to claim that the impeachment resolution’s citing of two quotes from Trump’s speech held shortly before the Capitol was breached – ” we won this election, and we won it by a landslide ” and ” if you don’t fight like hell you’re not going to have a country anymore ” – “lack any context, and are viewed in a light most unfavorable to the president.”
Those quotes were used to support Democrats ‘claims that Trump egged on the insurrection, but the Republican expungement resolution said the impeachment omitted that Trump “explicitly stated,’ I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard. ‘”
The resolution filed Wednesday seeks to expunge Trump’s second impeachment “as if such article had never passed the full House of Representatives, as the facts and circumstances upon which such article was based met the burden of proving neither that President Trump committed ” high crimes and misdemeanors ” … nor that President Trump engaged in ” insurrection or rebellion against the United States. ”
The resolution did not remark on Trump’s first impeachment on allegations of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress in connection with withholding military aid from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in exchange for damaging information against Joe Biden.
The Senate acquitted Trump in both cases.
