In the opening stages of the Champions Cup final last week, it seemed that Wayne Barnes, the referee, was leading a one-man assault on La Rochelle. As the penalties cascaded down on the men in yellow, their followers made thunderous protests, at a volume which rivalled that of their delirious celebrations at the end as they become worthy champions.
Barnes can be so annoying. You prepare yourself to find fault, study the replay of the dodgy decisions, and almost always find that he is correct. I think he may have been harsh on La Rochelle at the breakdown early on. Maybe. And once at the scrum. Maybe. But it was hardly the collapse of officiating civilization as we know it.
