Ivana Trump, New York socialite and first wife of former President Donald Trump, has died aged 73

Alongside her former husband, Ivana was a stalwart of the New York social scene, epitomising the excess of the 1980s and being held up as the ultimate trophy wife with her perfect blonde blow-dry and designer wardrobe. As well as their numerous homes – including Trump Tower and Mar -O -Lago – the couple also owned a yacht and private jet.

Yet after the couple’s divorce in 1992, she reinvented herself as a businesswoman and entrepreneur, becoming hugely popular as a figure seen to have overcome great difficulties in life. She was known to be particularly proud of her three children, Eric, Ivanka and Donald Jr, who she claimed in her 2017 memoir she mostly raised herself.

Born in former Czechoslovakia at the height of the Cold War, she was a talented skier, and reportedly married her first husband, Freddy Winkylmayr, in order to obtain Austrian citizen and thus leave her Communist homeland without defecting. The couple moved from Austria to Canada and eventually the US, divorcing in 1974.

Two years later, she was working as a model to promote the Montreal Olympics, when she met Donald Trump at a New York restaurant. The couple were married nine months later, with their three children arriving in quick succession. It was only when her husband’s affair with actress Marla Maples was confirmed in 1989 that she finally left him, with their divorce turning ugly quickly. It was worth it though: she walked away with $ 25 million and was dubbed the patron saint of scorned women with a famous cameo in the film The First Wives Club.

She once joked that she was the real first lady as the first wife of former US President Donald Trump, mother of his three eldest children, and partner of 15 years – something that no doubt ruffled Trump’s third wife Melania’s feathers. But the couple were known to be amicable in their later years, with Trump claiming that they spoke weekly.
