Trump’s ex-defense secretary says he didn’t ask for 10,000 Capitol troops
The select committee investigating the 6 January attack on the US Capitol has released audio from sworn testimony in which Donald Trump’s former acting defense secretary, Christopher Miller, confirms the president gave no order for thousands of National Guards to be deployed to the Capitol.
The audio contradicts claims recently made by Mr. Trump, as well as ex-staffers including Mark Meadows and Mr. Miller himself.
The news comes alongside reports that the ex-president is now the subject of a US Department of Justice investigation into his attempts to subvert the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.
Attorney General Merrick Garland said yesterday that the Justice Department has no qualms about the political blowback that would inevitably occur as a result of criminally indicting Mr. Trump.
Meanwhile, Mr. Trump yesterday gave his first speech in Washington DC since leaving office. He did so just hours after Mike Pence also addressed the DC crowd, saying elections are about the future.

Of all the investigations into Donald Trumps efforts to overturn the 2020 election, one of the most threatening to the former president himself is the grand jury probe in Fulton County, Georgia, which is looking into his allegedly illegal pressure campaign against election officials in the state .
The prosecutors leading the investigation have issued subpoenas for several close Trump allies, and have also heard testimony from some of the most senior Republicans in the state this week including sitting Governor Brian Kemp, who recently won a re-election primary over a Trump-backed challenger.

Donald Trump relentlessly promoted himself as the president of law and order, and despite the spectacle of a mob of his supporters brutalizing police officers on January 6, 2021, he and the Republicans have stuck to the line that they are the party who can keep Americans safe from crime.
To back up their claims, they invariably point to problems in Democratic-run states and cities but as Josh Marcus reports, this is highly misleading:
Texas had the highest number of gun deaths in 2020. Meanwhile, Republican, largely rural states with low populations Mississippi, Louisiana, Wyoming, Missouri, Alabama, and Alaska had the six highest per capita rates of gun deaths. These states also had the highest rates of gun ownership for the same period. In Mississippi, about half of adults live in a household with a gun.
In 2020, the per capita murder rate was 40 percent higher in states Donald Trump won during the 2020 election, according to a recent report from the center-left thinktank Third Way.
Murder rates are far higher in Trump-voting red states than Biden-voting blue states. And sometimes, murder rates are highest in cities with Republican mayors, the reports authors write. Yet there is barely a whisper, let alone an outcry, over the stunning levels of murders in these and other places.

Former vice president Mike Pence largely sidestepped any mention of Donald Trump during an address to young conservatives in Washington on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, Mr. Pence gave a speech to the national conference of Young Americas Foundation in Washington laying out the agenda that he would potentially attempt to sell to voters if he were to make a run for president.
Mr Pence, who is on what amounts to a constant national speaking tour, has confirmed more than once that he is at least thinking about a 2024 presidential run, although it is unclear whether he would do so if Mr Trump also ran. In polls of potential GOP primary candidates, he performs poorly in comparison to several other Trump alternatives in particular Ron DeSantis.

Donald Trumps former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is in talks to speak to the House January 6 select committee, a report claims.
Mr. Pompeo is set to give testimony to the committee behind closed doors in the next few days, according to ABC News.
The committee, which is investigating the attack on the US Capitol by a pro-Trump mob, held its final high-profile public hearing for the summer last week but has said it will return for more in September.

1658914139Jan 6 committee pushes back on ex-defense chiefs claims about National Guard order
Donald Trumps failure to call for military support during the 6 January riot has been one of the main focuses of the select committees investigation of events that day, but many of his own former staff have claimed in public that he did in fact want thousands of National Guard troops deployed on the day and that he gave an order to that effect in advance.
This includes two former Defense Department staffers, Kash Patel and Christopher Miller, who has previously appeared on Fox News and claimed that Mr Trump did in fact order troops to be present at the Capitol on the day of the electoral college certification a claim also made by Mark Meadows, and reiterated more recently by Mr. Trump himself.
In response to Mr. Trump’s latest claims, the Jan 6 committee has released audio from Mr. Miller’s testimony that flatly contradicts what he said on Sean Hannity’s show.
Mr. Miller has previously confirmed that he did not speak to Mr. Trump on the day of the insurrection, but did communicate with Mike Pence.

Former president Donald Trump said on Tuesday that it should be easier to fire rogue bureaucrats while speaking at the America First Agenda Summit in Washington, DC.
He said: We need to make it much easier to fire rogue bureaucrats who are deliberately undermining democracy or at a minimum just want to keep their jobs.
While speaking at the summit, he confirmed reports about his intent to implement Schedule F an executive order which would reassign governmental employees in a way that loosens their employment protections, making it easier to fire them and replace them with political appointees.
