According to Community creator Dan Harmon, Donald Glover’s Troy Barnes may be joining his Greendale study group for the upcoming Peacock movie after all.
The promise of six seasons and a movie has finally rung true for stalwart Community fans, with the cast for the Peacock exclusive follow-up film announced this past week. Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Jim Rash, Ken Jeong and Gillian Jacobs (not to be confused with The X-Files’ Gillian Anderson) will all be returning to reprise their roles from the NBC sitcom. Harmon recently told Variety that missing cast members, including Glover and Yvette Nicole Brown, could still be finalizing their deals for the film.

“I think that Donald is coming, based on word of mouth, but it’s just the deal isn’t official or wasn’t official,” Harmon said. “It would be difficult to really commit to doing this thing without Donald. So I believe he is coming back.” Regarding Glover and Brown’s yet-to-be-confirmed involvement in the film, he continued, “I think if there’s names missing from a list, it’s because the names that are on the list, their deals are agreed upon enough that it’s OK to say they are on the list, and anybody that’s not on a list, it’s just not the case yet. So there is nothing official about anybody being out.” Notably, Glover has expressed interest in returning to the role of Troy for a Community movie in the past, when “six seasons and a movie” was still a hypothetical notion.
Troy Barnes departed Greendale Community College on the Childish Tycoon, a boat that paid tongue-in-cheek homage to the actor’s musical moniker Childish Gambino, early into Community’s fifth season. Harmon had been reinstated as Community’s showrunner for Season 5 after being temporarily fired by NBC. While rumors circulated that Glover left due to the continued behind-the-scenes changing of the guard or to pursue his music career full-time, the actor stated he simply left the show for personal reasons.

Troy’s friendship with Pudi’s Abed was a staple of Community’s early semesters, particularly when the two began hosting their talk show Troy and Abed in the Morning. A reunion of the talk show co-hosts, best friends and roommates is certainly something fans would hope to see in the Community feature film.
When putting the Community film together, Harmon agreed with fans stating that “it would be difficult to really commit to doing this thing without Donald.” While Brown has been actively sharing and engaging with Community content on social media since the film’s announcement, Glover has been more tight-lipped about the matter. However, Harmon sounds assured that both actors will come aboard the project once their deals are finalized.
Class is back in session for Community fans, with the feature film set to premiere on Peacock.
