Donald Trump issued subpoena relating to January 6th attack – JURIST

Following a unanimous vote last week, the January 6th Committee has issued a subpoena to former President Donald J. Trump regarding his potential involvement in the attack on the Capitol.

The subpoena, signed by Chairman Bennie G. Thompson, discusses Trump’s false assertions of election fraud and their contribution to the January 6th, 2021 Capitol riots. It states:

You were at the center of the first and only effort by any US President to overturn an election and obstruct the peaceful transition of power, ultimately culminating in a bloody attack on our own Capitol and on the Congress itself. The evidence demonstrates that you knew this activity was illegal and unconstitutional, and also knew that your assertions of fraud were false. But, to be clear, even if you now claim that you actually believed your own false election claims, that is not a defense; your subjective belief could not render this conduct justified, excusable or legal

Trump is now obliged to testify about his relationships with multiple individuals connected with the January 6th attack. This includes Roger Stone, Michael Flynn, John Eastman and several others. The relevant documents are to be handed over by November 4th, and a deposition hearing will begin on November 14th. If Trump fails to comply, there could be contempt of Congress proceedings, similar to those under which Steven Bannon was recently convicted.

This subpoena comes just a week after Trump sent a letter to Chairman Bennie G. Thompson, which started with: THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION OF 2020 WAS RIGGED AND STOLEN! Trump went on to call the January 6th Committee a witch hunt of the highest level, despite 60 Courts ruling against his claims of election fraud.
