We are a nation of rubberneckers. Like everyone on the road, no matter how much traffic is moving at a crawl, we can’t help but slow down to stare at the scene of a car wreck.

Now we can’t help but slow down to watch another kind of car wreck: the slow but sure political death of Donald J. Trump who, it’s still hard to believe, was once the President of the United States, but soon to be one which is just a total piece of trash pulled to its final dumping ground.

I admit that I, too, was a little skeptical that it would happen. For good reason. We have seen this movie before. Like Houdini, we’ve seen Trump escape countless near-death experiences: the Access Hollywood tapes, the Mueller investigation, his botched response to Covid, two impeachments, and a violent attack at the US Capitol.

However, this time seems to be different. Trumps Teflon gown is finally wearing thin. In the past few weeks, on both the legal and political fronts, Trump has been hit by a series of setbacks that even he is unlikely to survive. Add more. All together, the list of problems he now faces is huge.

First, the legal challenges: Trumps is under fire simultaneously from prosecutors in New York City, New York state, Georgia and the Department of Justice. Meanwhile, he has only lost two major legal battles. The Supreme Court, filled with three of his nominees, rejected Trump’s plea for special treatment and ordered his tax returns to be turned over to the House Ways and Means Committee. And the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, including two Trump appointees, overruled a lower court judge Trump and denied the Trumps’ request to have a Special Master review presidential documents seized by the FBI at Mar-A-Lago. Both investigations will now continue.

Trumps is also the target of a criminal case being prosecuted by Georgia prosecutors for his attempts to subvert the 2020 presidential election; and of a civil suit brought by the New York state attorney general, in which he was accused, along with his three oldest children, of financial fraud. And this week, top Trump Organization executives, though not Trump himself, were found guilty of 17 criminal counts of tax fraud and other financial crimes.

Not only that. Under updated New York state law, the Trumps are still fighting a lawsuit brought by former Elle magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll, who accused him of raping her in a Bloomingdales dressing room. . Attorney General Merrick Garland has named a Special Counsel to investigate Trump’s possible criminal involvement in the attack on the Capitol on January 6. And Trump may also be one of those referred to the Justice Department by the House January 6 Committee for crime of sedition.

So much for Trump’s many legal challenges. He became even worse in the political arena. Herschel Walkers loss in the Georgia Senate run-off is the latest sign that whatever political magic Trump once had is quickly melting away. He plans to be the main agent in these midterms. Instead, he is their Agent Orange.

Beginning in the 2018 midterms, Trump led the Republican Party to three consecutive disasters. This time, his candidates for governor, in the primary or general election, lost in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin, New York, Arizona, Oregon, Kansas, and Maryland. His chosen candidates for the Senate lost in Arizona, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Georgia. Ultimately, he was deemed so toxic that the Walker campaign begged him to cancel a planned rally in Georgia on behalf of the Walkers.

Trumps political stock has fallen so low that more and more Republican rats are jumping off his sinking ship. Not just frequent Trump critics like Utahs Mitt Romney and Pennsylvanias Pat Toomey. Even longtime Trump loyalist John Cornyn (R-Texas) abandoned him, telling reporters: I don’t think he’s very relevant all the time.

But let’s be honest. Trump’s problems are not limited to the legal and political sphere. He is also clearly having problems on the mental health front. Indeed, his actions since the embarrassingly loose launch of his 2024 presidential bid openly dine with a white supremacist and Holocaust denier; going out with a QAnon pizzagate conspirator; Demanding that we end the Constitution he once promised to defend is the hallmark of a man who is not all there, if not bat-guano depraved.

Legally, politically, and mentally, Donald Trump is a dead man walking. Only a spineless sycophant like Kevin McCarthy could still defend him.
