Donald Trump refused to compromise his private life and insisted on continuing to act like a powerful president at his Barbie Dream House in Mar-a-Lago, The Washington Post reported on Sunday.
And that triggered major political stumbles and increased his risk of criminal liability, the newspaper warned.
Trump has transferred the chaos and defiance of his presidency into his current life, where he is more vulnerable to political missteps and accusations, the Post said.
The former president who worked tirelessly to dismantle the government’s guardrails is now almost completely unrestrained to his detriment, the Post concluded after interviewing 23 sources.
Trump is no longer untouchable, as he seems to be in the White House. He is now missing a critical group of handlers he had in the Oval Office who may have shielded him from some controversies, such as his disastrous Mar-a-Lago dinner with antisemitic rapper Ye, who was known as Kanye West, and white supremacist Nick Fuentes.
He needs someone there to say, Here’s a really bad idea, and this is why. I don’t think there is this kind of crowd around him now. The president doesn’t want anyone like that either, David Urban, a longtime Trump adviser, now critic, told the newspaper.
Trump is currently being served by several sycophants, according to the Post. An aide, Molly Michael, who has been Trump’s assistant in the White House, reportedly called around to ask her allies to call Trump to boost his spirits with positive affirmations, the paper reported.
A longtime Trump confidant compared former presidents’ Mar-a-Lago existence to a lonely, isolated life in a Barbie Dream House.
His conduct after the presidency, at a time when he was no longer in control of the Justice Department, likely led to a criminal indictment for mishandling classified documents and obstructing federal investigators from seeking records, Post suggested.
Trump has had a difficult transition to Mar-a-Lago, according to the Post. He said he was surprised by how much the details of his Secret Service and motorcade have shrunk along with his living space.
He is said to be upset that his statements to the press are not getting much attention, advisers told the Post. In early 2021, Trump reportedly asked advisers if he could convene a White House-like press pool for an event at Mar-a-Lago.
We had to explain to him that he no longer had a group standing around waiting for him, a former aide told the Post. The networks don’t carry his rallies. He can no longer do interviews. He couldn’t stand under the wing of Air Force One and gaggle [with reporters] for an hour.
Now he has to rely on members of his clubs in Mar-a-Lago and Bedminster, NJ, where he spends most of his time. They applaud him when he goes out to eat at restaurants and when he leaves.
